Divar Keeps Orange County Choppers Revving

Installing Bosch’s Divar lets Paul Senior keep tabs on the action during working hours while the system helps safeguard the rolling stock all around the clock.

If you have seen American Choppers on the Discovery Channel, it’s quickly apparent that Orange County Choppers (OCC) has some awesome hardware to protect. Montgomery, New York (about 80 miles north of New York City, 50 miles south of Woodstock) is home base for the custom motorcycle empire featured on American Choppers.

The company and the television series showcase the talent of Paul Teutul Senior, his two sons Paulie (Junior), Mikey and a small group of highly skilled metalworking craftspeople who are creating the OCC legend with a rideable but very exclusive portfolio of choppers and motorcycles for celebrities such as Jay Leno and Wyclef Jean and chopper lovers all over the country – producing as many as 150 bikes a year. Their choppers and old style motorcycles are one-of-a-kind “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it” expensive, starting from $39,000, nicely outfitted at roughly $45,000.

Although OCC has other cameras monitoring the garages, they didn’t have the quality or the flexibility of Bosch Security Systems’ CCTV equipment. Last December, a Bosch Divar Digital Versatile Recorder, 17” high performance flat screen color monitor, IntuiKey keyboard, two AutoDomes™ and one EnviroDome™ cameras became part of the famed OCC custom motorcycle design and fabrication plant.

Divar is unique because it is not a personal computer, so it is invulnerable to computer viruses, worms and never needs service pack upgrades. However, it is fully networkable and accessible from any PC – allowing Paul Senior to keep tabs on Paulie Junior and the rest of the crew from anywhere in the world. He can watch live shots or bring up archived events to make sure things are being done his way.

The AutoDome cameras are installed in the main fabrication and machine shop where the lion’s share of the creative metal fabrication takes place. The color monitor in Senior’s office lets him pan, tilt and zoom the cameras 360°, never missing a single detail and checking up on the guys without them knowing they are being watched.

“We all think the Divar system is great,” commented Joe Puliafico, OCC’s director of retail operations. “Junior loves it, especially the clarity of the image when you zoom in really close.” The AutoDome cameras can be set to perform a hands-free pre-programmed routine “tour” and automatically track unexpected motion, following the activity throughout the area and initiating an alarm, if necessary. Or, as Paul Senior likes to use it, an operator can manually control the camera’s movements and zoom to focus wherever necessary. AutoDome is available with 18x or 26x zoom function to image precisely the smallest details other cameras miss.

The EnviroDome camera patrols outside, between the entry door and the employee parking lot. “We depend on this camera as the telephone operators are leaving the office at night,” Puliafico explained. “That way, we know the ladies are getting to their cars safely.” The AutoDomes and the EnviroDome are day/night cameras that automatically switch from full color to monochrome when light levels decrease while maintaining sensitivity and high resolution, up to 26x. Even the harsh winter weather of the Catskills doesn’t prevent the OCC EnviroDome from monitoring the area 24/7.

Established in 1999, Orange County Choppers grew out of Orange County Ironworks, a steel fabrication enterprise founded nearly 30 years ago by custom-chopper builder and rider Paul Teutul, Senior. OCC burst on the custom-bike scene at Daytona Biketoberfest 1999 with "True Blue," a classic chopper built in the basement of Paul Senior’s house. Other signature and theme bikes have followed, including the Spider Bike, purchased by musician Wyclef Jean of the Fugees, the Fire Bike commemorating the New York City Fire Department’s sacrifices on September 11, 2001 and the Jet Bike, built to honor U.S. military forces in Afghanistan.

When the Bosch Divar system was installed, it was put to immediate use without much fanfare. “We’re pretty self-sufficient with it,” noted Puliafico. “We had about a five minute overview for training and otherwise we have all been working with it. We like the way it works and what it does for us.”
